Overview
Shoulder arthroplasty is surgical replacement of the damaged shoulder joint with artificial components (prosthetics). This is highly effective for severe osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, post-traumatic arthritis and irreparable rotator cuff tears. Modern prosthetics are durable, mobile and provide excellent outcomes for 15-20+ years.
Common symptoms
- Severe pain limiting daily activities
- Significant loss of motion and function
- Pain that doesn't improve with conservative treatment
- Bone-on-bone contact on imaging
The procedure
Mr Mitra makes an anterior approach incision, accessing the shoulder joint through the pectoralis major muscle. Damaged bone and cartilage are removed. The ball (humeral head) is replaced with a metal sphere attached to a stem. The socket (glenoid) is resurfaced with a plastic component. Proper positioning and soft tissue balance ensure optimal function.
Recovery
Initial recovery requires hospital stay of 1-2 nights with arm in sling. Early physiotherapy begins in hospital. Gradual range of motion exercises progress over 4-6 weeks. Strengthening begins at week 6 with careful progression. Most patients achieve excellent function by 3-6 months and continue improving for up to one year.
