Overview
The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles and tendons that stabilise the shoulder. Tears can develop gradually with age and overuse, or suddenly after an injury or fall.
Where rest, physiotherapy and injections have not resolved symptoms, surgical repair offers the best chance of restoring long-term function.
Common symptoms
- Pain when lifting or lowering the arm
- Weakness when rotating the shoulder
- A crackling sensation with certain movements
- Difficulty sleeping on the affected side
The procedure
The repair is performed arthroscopically through several small incisions. Mr Mitra reattaches the torn tendon to the bone using small anchors, typically as a day-case under general anaesthetic.
Recovery
A sling is worn for the first few weeks, followed by a structured physiotherapy programme. Most patients return to desk work within 2–3 weeks and to full activity over 4–6 months.
