17 Revision Shoulder Replacement 1

Overview

Revision shoulder replacement is a more complex procedure performed when a previous shoulder replacement has failed, worn out or developed complications. Reasons include implant loosening, component wear, infection or unstable repair. Mr Mitra specialises in revision cases and uses advanced techniques to achieve excellent outcomes even in complex situations.

Common symptoms

The procedure

Mr Mitra accesses the previous surgical site, removes the failed components carefully while preserving bone stock. Bone loss is addressed using bone grafts or specialised augments. New prosthetic components are positioned precisely and fixed with cement or screws. Advanced imaging and techniques ensure optimal alignment and function.

Recovery

Revision surgery recovery is similar to primary replacement but may require slightly longer hospital stay and rehabilitation. Protected immobilisation continues for 4 weeks followed by gradual range of motion exercises. Strengthening progresses carefully to protect new implants. Most patients return to normal activities by 3-6 months.
