Overview
Clavicle fractures are common shoulder injuries usually resulting from falls or direct trauma. The fracture may be simple (uncomplicated) or displaced (broken pieces separated). Most heal well with conservative treatment (sling immobilisation). Displaced fractures may require surgery to ensure proper healing and shoulder function.
Common symptoms
- Pain and swelling over the collarbone
- Visible bump or deformity
- Difficulty moving the arm
- Pain with shoulder movement or pressure
The procedure
Most simple fractures heal with sling immobilisation and physiotherapy without surgery. For displaced fractures, Mr Mitra performs open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) using plates and screws to hold the broken pieces in proper alignment. This allows earlier rehabilitation and ensures good healing in all patient types.
Recovery
Conservative treatment requires sling immobilisation for 4-6 weeks. Surgical patients typically have 1-night hospital stay. Early gentle physiotherapy begins within days. Strengthening progresses carefully. Most patients achieve union within 6-8 weeks (conservative) or 8-12 weeks (surgical) with full recovery by 3-4 months.
